Chapter Six
Evaâs thighs burned. Her stirrups hung crossed over the pommel of her saddle. She kept her hands in riding position though Cin had a cavesson on while Cora lunged him at a nice extended trot. She posted, working to build up balance and stamina. And to think, it wasnât even No Stirrups November yet.
âFive more minutes. Think of this as your gym visit for the day.â Cora chuckled at her joke.
âVery funny,â Eva said, though she beamed at the way her skills had improved. When sheâd first gotten Cin, she couldnât even post without stirrups for ten minutes without sinking back into the saddle, her thighs trembling. Her skills had improved so much, and she owed it all to Cin and to Cora.
âEasy, walk.â Cora said, signaling Cin to slow. The gelding eased into a walk and at Coraâs command stopped. He stretched out his neck, blowing.
âYou realize Iâm not going to be able to get down,â Eva said as she unfolded her stirrups and slipped her boots into them again. She let Cora lead her over to the mounting block and after a mental pep talk she dismounted without falling on her ass and led Cin back to the barn. âThanks for the workout,â she told Cora.
âNo problem. Let me know what time works best for you in a couple of days and weâll set up some jumps and a mock course in the outdoor. Youâll be ready for the show. I promise.â
âThanks. I appreciate it.â Eva put Cinâs halter on and clipped him into the cross-ties. She might not be into Saraâs hill work, but a few extra lessons to make sure she was ready for the show put her mind at ease. She removed Cinâs tack and brushed him.
Later that night she sat on her couch with her laptop and poured over the entry form. Had she chosen the right classes? Could she have made different choices? Her cell phone rang. She glanced at it. Mark.
She picked up her wine glass as she answered the phone. âHello?â She took a sip.
âEva. How are you?â Mark said.
âFine. Just looking at the class listings for the Invitational. Trying to figure out if Iâm doing the right thing.â Why she added the last part, she didnât know.
âAre you? I donât know anything about what you do. I do know that whatever you put your mind to, you achieve. Youâre a force, Eva. I think youâre doing the right thing.â
Markâs words warmed her. âReally? Thank you.â She grinned, a goofy smile that plastered itself across her face and wouldnât leave. Thank goodness he wasnât there to see it. She was sure she looked like an idiot. Still, his faith in herâ¦that felt good. Really good.
âItâs the truth. I maybe didnât say it as often as I needed to and for that Iâm sorry.â
If she hadnât been sitting down, Eva might have fallen over. âWow. Thank you.â Emotion choked her voice and she swallowed hard. Another sip from her wine glass was in order.
